Choosing a Delhi to Leh tour package? Compare the four main styles, fly-in, road via Manali, road via Srinagar and the full circuit, with typical durations, what is included, who each suits, approximate budgets and the questions to ask before booking.

A Delhi to Leh tour package can mean very different trips: a one-hour flight followed by a week in Ladakh, a two-day drive over the Manali highway, a scenic route through Kashmir, or a grand circuit that does all of it. Picking the right style matters more than picking the right hotel. In this guide I compare the four main package styles, explain what is usually included, give approximate budgets and share the questions to ask before you pay. Prices and schedules change every season, so treat figures as indicative.

The four styles of Delhi to Leh tour package

StyleTypical lengthBest for
Fly-in, fly-out6–8 daysShort leave, families, first-timers
Road via Manali, fly back9–11 daysRoad lovers who want gradual acclimatisation
Road via Srinagar, fly back9–11 daysTravellers who want Kashmir and Kargil too
Full circuit (Manali in, Srinagar out or reverse)12–15 daysLong holidays, photographers, groups

Fly-in packages

You fly from Delhi to Leh in about 1 hour 15 minutes, then spend two days resting and exploring Leh before heading to Nubra and Pangong. It is the most time-efficient option. The catch is altitude: you go from near sea level to about 3,500 m in an hour, so the first 48 hours must be very easy.

Road via Manali

Delhi to Manali by Volvo, car or a short flight to the nearest airport, then two days over the Leh–Manali highway. The gradual climb helps your body adjust, and the scenery is extraordinary. It needs more days and suits people who enjoy long drives. Compare details in our Manali Leh package guide.

Road via Srinagar

Fly from Delhi to Srinagar, enjoy Dal Lake and Sonamarg, then drive to Leh via Zoji La, Drass and Kargil. This road usually opens earlier in the season than the Manali side. Our Delhi Srinagar Leh package article covers this style in detail.

The full circuit

Enter by one highway and leave by the other. It is the most complete way to see the region and avoids repeating any road, but it needs at least 12 days.

Fly-in or road: an honest comparison

Travellers often ask me which is better. The answer depends on what you value. A fly-in plan saves at least three or four days and is far less tiring, which is why it suits short holidays, families with young children and anyone who dislikes long drives. Its weakness is the sudden jump in altitude, which makes the first two days in Leh feel slow and occasionally uncomfortable.

A road plan turns the journey into the highlight. You cross some of the highest passes in the country, sleep in camps under huge skies and arrive in Leh already partly acclimatised. The trade-offs are time, fatigue, and exposure to closures and monsoon delays. Road packages also cost more overall because of the extra days and one-way vehicle charges.

A middle path that works well is to drive in and fly out. You get the gradual climb and the scenery on the way up, then a quick return home at the end, when you are tired and ready for your own bed. Many of the Delhi to Leh tour package plans we build follow exactly this pattern.

  • Hotels, camps or homestays on twin or triple sharing.
  • Breakfast and dinner at most stays.
  • A private or shared vehicle with driver for all sightseeing.
  • Airport pickup and drop in Leh, and Delhi transfers in some road packages.
  • Permit assistance for Nubra, Pangong and other protected areas.
  • Trip coordination and often oxygen support in the vehicle.

Usually excluded

  • Flights, unless clearly listed.
  • Lunches, entry tickets, camel rides, rafting and other activities.
  • Travel insurance and personal expenses.
  • Extra nights due to flight cancellations or road closures.

Approximate budgets

For a standard package with good hotels and a private vehicle shared by four, expect roughly ₹25,000–₹40,000 per person for a 7-day fly-in plan excluding flights, and ₹35,000–₹60,000 for a 10–12 day road or circuit plan. Budget group departures cost less; premium stays cost more. For a full breakdown of price factors, see our Delhi to Leh package cost guide.

Choosing the right package for your group

Families with children

A fly-in plan with two rest days in Leh and a day trip to Pangong rather than an overnight is usually easiest. If you prefer road travel, the Srinagar route has lower overnight halts than the Manali route.

Seniors

Choose comfortable hotels with heating, avoid very long drive days and keep extra rest. A medical check-up before booking is essential.

Couples and honeymooners

A private vehicle, boutique hotels in Leh and a better camp at Pangong make the trip special without adding much cost.

Friends and road-trip lovers

The circuit or a Manali road package is the most memorable. Bikers can join a guided motorcycle package.

  4. Day 4: Leh to Nubra over Khardung La.
  5. Day 5: Nubra to Pangong (or back to Leh).
  6. Day 6: Pangong to Leh via Chang La.
  7. Day 7: Fly back to Delhi.

Best time and preparation

Fly-in packages run from roughly April to October, with June to September the most popular. Road packages depend on highway opening: Srinagar–Leh typically opens earlier than Manali–Leh. July and August can bring monsoon delays on the Himachal and Kashmir sides. September is clear, calm and less crowded. Pack warm layers, sunscreen, sunglasses and a basic medical kit. Carry cash and a postpaid SIM, since prepaid connections from other states usually do not work in Ladakh.

Altitude safety

Whichever style you choose, the rule is the same: rest on arrival in Leh, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first two days and do not go to Khardung La or Pangong until you feel well. Speak to your doctor about preventive medicine before travel.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is there a full rest day on arrival in Leh?
  • What are the names of hotels and camps?
  • Is the vehicle private or shared, and which model?
  • Who arranges permits, and are fees included?
  • What happens if a flight is cancelled or a road closes?
  • What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Frequently Asked Questions

For most first-timers with a week or so, a fly-in package is the simplest: you reach Leh in about an hour and a half, rest, then explore Nubra and Pangong. If you have ten days or more and want the journey to be part of the holiday, a road package via Manali or Srinagar gives a gentler climb and spectacular scenery.

It depends on the package. Fly-in packages usually start at Leh airport, so Delhi transfers are not included. Road packages that start in Delhi often include pickup from a hotel or a central point. Ask whether the Delhi to Manali or Srinagar leg is by private car, Volvo bus or flight.

Yes, for road packages via Manali, Chandigarh is a natural starting point that saves several hours of driving. Many travellers from Punjab, Haryana and the hills prefer it. For fly-in packages, you can also fly to Leh from Chandigarh on some days, subject to airline schedules.

Trains can take you from Delhi to Chandigarh or Kalka for the Manali route, or to Jammu for the Srinagar route. From there you continue by road or connect to a flight. It is an economical option, but it adds time and transfers. Discuss connection timings with your operator before booking.

There is no fixed legal age, but many doctors advise caution with infants and very young children at Ladakh's altitude. Children above about five to seven usually cope well with a slow plan, rest days and shorter drives. Consult your paediatrician, and avoid overnight stays at very high places like Pangong with young children.

Yes, many couples choose Ladakh for its landscapes and quiet. Pick a private vehicle, comfortable hotels with heating, a rest day on arrival and a Pangong stay with better facilities. Avoid packing too much into each day. A fly-in plan with Nubra and Pangong in 7 or 8 days is a popular honeymoon format.

In Leh, packages use everything from family guesthouses to boutique and premium hotels. In Nubra and Pangong, stays are mostly camps, cottages and homestays, with a few hotels. Ask for the names of stays and check photographs and reviews. Heating, hot water and attached bathrooms matter more than star ratings here.

Yes. Turtuk adds a day or so to a Nubra visit, and Tso Moriri usually needs one or two extra nights from Leh or Pangong. Both are remote with simpler stays and patchy network. They are best added once you have acclimatised for a few days in Leh and Nubra.

Two to three months ahead is wise for June and July, when flights, hotels and camps fill fast and prices climb. For September, a month or six weeks is usually enough. Booking early also gives you more choice of stays at Pangong and Nubra, where good options are limited.

Usually not. Most packages exclude insurance, so buy a policy that covers high-altitude travel, medical treatment and, ideally, emergency evacuation. Read the fine print for altitude limits and adventure activities. Insurance is especially important for seniors and anyone with existing health conditions.
